Why Do Kelly Osbourne’s Shoes Look Good Enough to Eat?

Kelly Osbourne shows off her delicious new heels. (Instagram)
Kelly Osbourne is embracing summertime … from her head down to her feet!

The "Fashion Police star was on hand to celebrate mom-to-be Fergie's baby shower in West Hollywood on Sunday afternoon  and she was one of the sweetest things in the room thanks to her fabulous footwear.
"Loving my new ice cream cone jelly heels," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram before the party, posting a pic of her refreshing fashion statement. The platform heels, which are a design collaboration between Brazilian shoe label Melissa and iconic designer (and harsh fashion critic Karl Lagerfeld, are mostly black matching Osbourne's long-sleeved LBD with a decorative glittery pink single scoop of ice cream on the heel above a wafer cone. Also of note? The plastic shoes are scented. Each pair gives off a fruity fragrance.
And they won't melt! Well, anything other than our hearts, that is.
Also, unlike an actual ice cream cone, which will set you back a couple of bucks, these pumps are pricier, retailing for $175 on Saks Fifth Avenue's website. Not exactly cheap for plastic shoes, but they should last longer than your average sticky, drippy ice cream cone. And, hey, at least they're low in calories.
It seems that Osbourne's shoes were perfect for Fergie's shower, which  according to our eyewitness  was a fun, festive, and untraditional affair. One of the highlights of the bash was a performance by drag queen (and former "Australian Idol" semi-finalist) Courtney Act. And guests decorated onesies with rhinestones for the baby, who the singer and husband Josh Duhamel recently announced will be a boy.

Ronda Rousey’s ‘Body Issue’ picture immortalized in fan tattooa

UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey posed nude for the cover of ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue in 2012
. One fan was so moved by the picture he had the image turned into a tattoo. There was some artistic license taken with the tattoo, like UFC gloves instead of the body wraps, but it's not a bad likeness of the champ.
Here's the big question: Rousey's rival coach on the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter" and opponent at UFC 168, Miesha Tate, posed for the Body Issue this year. Will we see some overzealous fan with Tate body ink next year?

Police: Woman arrested in DC cathedral vandalism

WASHINGTON (AP)  A woman was arrested Monday after green paint was found splattered inside two chapels at the Washington National Cathedral, and police were investigating her in connection with two similar incidents on the National Mall, authorities said.

Tian Jiamel, 58, was arrested inside the cathedral shortly after the paint was found and charged with defacing property, police and cathedral officials said. Investigators were hoping to question her about the vandalism on the Mall, including at the Lincoln Memorial, but a language barrier was complicating those efforts, Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said soon after the arrest.
It was not immediately clear if Jiamel had an attorney. Police believed she was homeless. No motive was given.
Green paint was found early Friday morning on the Lincoln Memorial, and symbols were found painted in green later Friday on another statue on the Mall. The Lincoln Memorial was closed temporarily but reopened later Friday.
Officials at the cathedral discovered the paint inside two chapels Monday afternoon. It was still wet, which led them to believe the vandalism had just occurred. Officials called police immediately and closed the cathedral to visitors while authorities searched the grounds. The paint was splashed onto an organ and on the floor inside the cathedral's historic Bethlehem Chapel on the basement level, officials said. It was also found inside Children's Chapel in the nave of the cathedral. Also Monday, U.S. Park Police said green paint was found on the statue of Joseph Henry outside the headquarters of the Smithsonian Institution on the Mall. Henry was the Smithsonian's first secretary.
Meanwhile, crews continued working Monday to remove the paint from the Lincoln Memorial. The National Park Service said progressively stronger substances would be used until all the paint is gone, which could take several days. The memorial was scheduled to be power washed Tuesday.
Sgt. Paul Brooks, a U.S. Park Police spokesman, said it was too early to tell whether the same person was responsible for the vandalism at the two Mall landmarks. He noted that while the paint appeared to be splattered indiscriminately on the memorial, the statue appeared to have been deliberately painted. The symbols on the statue were not immediately decipherable.
Cleanup and restoration work at the cathedral was expected to cost 15,000, cathedral spokesman Richard Weinberg said. Crews were there late Monday, and events at the cathedral were going on as scheduled. Some of the paint was splattered onto the decorative wall behind the altar in the Children's Chapel, which has ornate wood carvings that required some restoration, Weinberg said.
Bethlehem Chapel was opened in 1912 and is the oldest section of the cathedral. It was the site of President Woodrow Wilson's burial rites, and his remains were entombed there for more than three decades. Wilson's remains were later interred in a memorial bay on the cathedral's main level.Washington National Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral that serves as the nation's spiritual home. It has hosted inaugural prayer services and the state funerals for presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

5 fashion items that are worth the splurge and 4 that aren’t

It’s easy to overspend when restocking your closet. To smartly allocate your budget, stick to this rule: “If it’s an item you think will look as good on you in five years, it may be worth spending on,” says Jessie
Holeva, editor of TrendHungry.com, a Philadelphia-based fashion site. Not sure which clothes fit the bill? Here are

five pieces to invest in, and four you should buy inexpensively“You can pretty much wear it with anything,”
says Holevaand in any season. The versatile piece tops a flowing dress and feminine blouse as well as it pairs
with jeans. Low-quality leather can tear and get discolored easily, so getting a high-quality jacket, which starts at about $300, is worth the investment. Pick a neutral color, such as black or brown, in a classic style. A short one with a tailored collar won’t look dated after a few years, explains Holeva. Consider long-lasting lambskin jackets, which look shiny and feel soft. While shelling out on what’s underneath seems like a waste, a bra is actually one of the most important investments, says Ginger Burr, a Boston-based image consultant who works with women over 40. When you wear a well-constructed, properly fitting bra, “lumps and bumps are minimized, your body is brought into balance and you look taller and slimmer,” says Burr, who
recommends women have at least four good bras. Look for ones that don’t fit too snuggly or too loosely around the torso and shoulders. Dump bras with straps that have stretched out with constant wear.A classic pair of dark, straight-leg jeans stays stylish season after season. Pricier denim maintains its shape and color, even after dozens of washes, because it has higher-quality threads and construction. Consider the cost-per-wear price to justify the expense, explains Holeva. “Jeans that cost $150 worn 150 times are only $1 per wear,” she says. Look for pairs that are soft to the touch and made from a medium-thick fabric of at least 98% cotton. Don’t pick washes that are too trendy: “Opt for all-American blue or black jeans,” says Holeva.

Good-natured Rex Ryan takes photo with Jets fan wearing ‘This team makes me drink’ shirt

CORTLAND, N.Y. – A chance meeting between a New York Jets fan and coach Rex Ryan showed that even though Ryan is facing the pressure of a season on the hot seat, he
still has a sense of humor.
On Saturday night following the second day of training camp, Ryan and his coaching staff went out to enjoy the nightlife of Cortland, N.Y. and bumped into Joseph Grinwis, a lifelong Jets fan. When Grinwis strolled up to Ryan around midnight on Saturday night to ask for a photo, he wasn’t sure how his T-shirt would be handled by the head coach of his long-suffering team.
His shirt simply said: “This Team Makes Me Drink.”
“I was a little bit ‘Oh no’ inside. I mean, the one night I’m wearing this shirt, you know?” said Grinwis, who made the trip from Wantage Township, N.J., more than a three-hour drive from upstate New York, to watch training camp. “But he was cool with it. Maybe he wasn’t on the inside but he seemed cool with it.”
Ryan referenced the trip to downtown Cortland during his Sunday press conference.
“The entire coaching staff and scouting department went out last night. That’s how close this group is. And not because you make them, well half of them,” Ryan said jokingly. “But we all go out and we sit around, we talk – had a water.”
Grinwis said he saw Ryan in the Dark Horse Tavern and spoke with the head coach, telling him how much he loved the Jets. He said that Ryan was appreciative of his support and the effort he made to come up to training camp.
And even seemed fine with a T-shirt poking fun at his team.

“He looked at it and laughed,” Ginwis said. “He didn’t make a comment. He just laughed.”

Wow! Christina Aguilera Reveals Dramatic Beauty Makeunder

Christina Aguilera is back!
All eyes were on the 32-year-old "Your Body" singer when she appeared at an NBC press event in Beverly
Hills on Saturday to promote her big return to "The Voice." Not only was the show mentor showing off her slim, trim new frame, which there has been buzz about in recent months, but she also unveiled a serious style makeunder.Wearing a curve-accentuating pink minidress with a flirty ruffled bottom, Aguilera looked like she did in her early days. The subtle, natural look (including her barely there makeup!) was a departure from how we've come to expect her on the reality series. There were no rhinestones, bustiers, hotpants, spiked berets, or other attention-grabbing fashions which have become part of her signature style on "The Voice." Just a beautiful, fresh-faced Aguilera, looking tanned, toned, rested, and ready for Season 5.
This isn't the first inkling we've had that her return (after sitting out Season 4) will bring new things. Earlier this month she rocked another more demure look at a press junket for the show. That style, which more business chic than rock star, had her in a hip-hugging black and white skirt and a black blouse that was significantly more conservative than her usual over-the-top fashions.I'm the type of person that I cannot live in front of the camera 24 hours a day," the singer told the Television Critics Association panel on Saturday about her hiatus from the show and new look. "I have to take breaks and stay connected with myself. I think it’s important so that I can then be [my] best on camera and find [my] own happiness with it.
Aguilera said her time off was also about spending time with her son, Max  and noted that when she's home with the 5-year-old, her personal style is stripped down and very simple.I'm a mom and … the cameras go off, I go home, I put on sweats and a T-shirt. The red lips come off. I check out and I’m mom," she said. "I needed some time to do that. He starts kindergarten this fall. ... I wanted to also, for myself, [to] have a moment … for me. It's really important to take that time in this business, when everything’s give, give, give  especially when you’re on camera so much  you need to take it back for a second and bring it back to yourself and just realign some things. I’ve been on a really incredible journey the past six months and I just feel revived.

Well, not only does she feel revived, but she also looks it. And we can't wait to see her with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green when "The Voice" returns on September 23.

Egypt warns sit-ins as weekend death toll climbs

CAIRO (AP)  Egypt's interior minister on Sunday pledged to deal decisively with any attempts to destabilize the country, a thinly veiled warning to supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi occupying two
squares in Cairo in a month-long stand-off with the security forces. The warning came as authorities said that the death toll in weekend clashes between Mohammed Morsi's Islamist backers and security forces near one of those sit-ins had reached 72, in the deadliest single outbreak of violence since the July 3 military coup.
"I assure the people of Egypt that the police are determined to maintain security and safety to their nation and are capable of doing so," Mohammed Ibrahim told a graduation ceremony at the national police academy. "We will very decisively deal with any attempt to undermine stability," said Ibrahim, who is in charge of the police.Ibrahim's comments added pressure on Morsi's backers three weeks after the Islamist president was ousted in a military coup that followed days of street protests by millions calling on him to step down.
On Friday, millions again took to the streets in a show of support for Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the military chief who ousted Morsi. Those protests were in response to Abdel-Fattah's call for a mandate for him and the police to tackle what he called violence and potential terrorism.View gallery."In this Friday, July 26, 2013, photo released on Saturday, …In this Friday, July 26, 2013, photo released on Saturday, July 27, by the Egyptian army, opponentsIbrahim, who had been appointed by Morsi, took an uncompromising stance in a news conference on Saturday, accusing the pro-Morsi side of provoking bloodshed to win sympathy and suggesting that authorities could move against the two main pro-Morsi protest camps: one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in eastern Cairo and another in Nahda Square near the main campus of Cairo university. He depicted the two encampments as a danger to the public, pointing to a string of nine bodies police have said were found nearby in recent days. Some had been tortured to death, police have said, apparently by members of the sit-ins who believed they were spies.
"Soon we will deal with both sit-ins," Ibrahim said.On Tuesday, Khaled el-Khateeb, head of the ministry's emergency and intensive care department, said that beside the 72 killed in the Cairo clashes, eight were killed in clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria also over the weekend.A total of 792 people were wounded in both incidents, which spanned Friday and early Saturday, he said.View gallery."In this Friday, July 26, 2013, photo released on Saturday, …

The Cairo violence took place when pro-Morsi protesters sought to expand their sit-in camp by moving onto a nearby main boulevard, only to be confronted by police and unidentified armed men in civilian clothes.
Civilians, sometimes with weapons, are frequently seen alongside police in Cairo demonstrations. In some cases, they appear to be police auxiliaries or plainclothesmen, in others residents who back the security forces.
Authorities concede that the vast majority of the dead in Cairo were demonstrators, but the Interior Ministry says some policemen were wounded and it is not clear if civilians who sided with police were among the dead.
The extent of the bloodshed pointed to a rapidly building confrontation between the country's two camps, sharply divided over the coup that removed Egypt's first freely elected president following protests by millions of Egyptians demanding he step down.
Officials from Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and their allies decried what they called a new "massacre" against their side, only weeks after July 8 clashes with army troops in Cairo that left more than 50 Morsi supporters dead.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that he spoke to Egyptian authorities, saying it is "essential" they respect the right to peaceful protest. He called on all sides to enter a "meaningful political dialogue" to "help their country take a step back from the brink."
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also asked security forces to "act with full respect for human rights" and demonstrators to "exercise restraint."The U.N.'s human rights chief Navi Pillay issued also condemned the violence.
In a Sunday statement, she said: "Despite all the warnings, all the calls for restraint, more than 150 Egyptians have died during protests over the past month, not just in Cairo but in other cities as well," she said. "I fear for the future of Egypt if the military and other security forces, as well as some demonstrators, continue to take such a confrontational and aggressive approach. Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have the right to protest peacefully like anyone else."
Pillay called for a "credible, independent investigation" into the killings and punishment for those responsible. "Given what has happened in recent days, further protests are inevitable, and the onus is clearly on both the security forces and the protesters to ensure there is no repetition of yesterday's terrible and deeply tragic events."

Neither side in the Egyptian conflict, however, has shown much taste for reconciliation. Islamists staunchly reject the new leadership and insist the only possible solution to the crisis is to reinstate Morsi. Meanwhile, the interim leadership is pushing ahead with a fast-track transition plan to return to a democratically elected government by early next year.

Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, a longtime pro-democracy campaigner who backed the military's ouster of Morsi, raised one of the few notes of criticism of Saturday's bloodshed.

"I highly condemn the excessive use of force and the fall of victims," he wrote in a tweet, though he did not directly place blame for the use of force. He added that he is "working very hard and in all directions to end this confrontation in a peaceful manner."

But the image of the Islamists as dangerous and not the peaceful protesters they contend they are has had a strong resonance. Over past weeks, there have been cases of armed Islamist Morsi backers attacking opponents — though the reverse also has occurred. Before Saturday, some 180 people had been killed in clashes nationwide.

Fashion Faceoff: Selena Gomez vs. Kourtney Kardashian

When they wore it: The reality star rocked her studded sandals during a lunch date with her daughter, Penelope, at Taberna in Los Angeles on July 13. The "Come & Get It"
singer stepped out in her fashionable footwear as she left a Burbank studio with her Starbucks in hand on July 21.
How they styled it: Selena kept her look casual with a pair of black shorts, a white T-shirt, a boho chic bag, and blown out locks. The mother of two rocked similar bottoms, but polished off her outfit with a green and black check blouse, an oversized diaper bag, and cat-eye sunglasses.

Judge's scorecard: While Kardashian scores points for dressing up the look with a little color (and toting a cute kiddo!), the sandals are enough of a statement piece that they don't need to be fussed with. Do you agree?

Eid Ul Fiter Shopping For 2013

During Ramadan, shopping for Eid in the walled quarter of Hyderabad does not end with the night.
In fact, it picks up at night with the centuries-old markets doing business round-the-clock.

As such, with only a couple of days left for Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the culmination of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, all roads in the city are now leading to shops, hotels, roadside eateries and the ubiquitous vendors around Charminar, the symbol of Hyderabad and the hub of Eid shopping.
In fact, the old city and some Muslim-majority areas in the central part of the city never sleep during the holy month.

While the faithful spend the holy nights in prayers, other men, women and children throng the markets for Eid shopping.
As one crosses the Musi river to enter the old city, the aroma of haleem (a Ramadan dish of meat, wheat flour, spices and ghee) wafts in.
The numerous hotels at Madina Junction and on the High Court Road do brisk business selling haleem, said to have come to Hyderabad via Iran and Afghanistan during the Mughal period.

The Madina-Charminar road, notorious for its traffic chaos throughout the day, is witnessing jams throughout the night these days, with vendors occupying the footpaths and selling from garments to hairpin.
Madina, Patthargatti, Patel Market, Gulzar Houz and Laad Bazar  famous for readymade garments, textiles, footwear, jewellery, pearls, bangles attar (natural perfumes) and crockery, cutlery, upholstery –teem with thousands of buyers. The city authorities may be planning to open a night bazaar around Charminar for long, but every year during Ramadan, the area by itself turns into a night bazaar, especially in the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Those fasting, including women, take a break from shopping to end their fast in the lawns of the historic Mecca Masjid.
After tasting haleem, dahi bade and other delicacies at nearby eateries, they resume the shopping with fresh energy and this goes on till late into the night.
The price hike has not dampened the spirits of Eid.
“We may have to spend a few bucks more, but we can’t do without shopping for our families, especially as the occasion comes once a year,” said Syed Yousuf, who works in a private company.
The prices of readmade garments have gone up by over 30 percent this year and the traders attribute it mainly to rising transport costs.
“Last year, I bought a dress for Rs.5,000 but this year, it cost me Rs.7,000,” said Shaheda Parveen, a student.

While many glittering and sprawling shopping malls have come up in the city in the last few years, the area around Charminar remains the hot favourite for Eid shopping.
Shoppers from neighbouring districts and even from Maharashtra and Karnataka pour in for shopping.
Almost all the families buy new clothes, footwear and bangles for the occasion. What makes these markets so special is the fact that they cater to all sections of society.
With well-to-do families paying ‘zakat slamic wealth tax of 2.5 percent on their cash and other valuables) and every man who fasts paying ‘fitra’ fixed this year at Rs.60 the poor also join the festivities by buying clothes, ‘sweyian’, dry fruits and other items for ‘sheer khorma’  a sweet dish prepared in almost every houshold on Eid.
The Eid shopping is the climax of unprecedented month-long economic activity.
Truckloads of dates, preferred for breaking fasts, and fruits are sold every day.
The meat supply goes up drastically to meet the demand from hotels preparing haleem.
With Muslims accounting for 40 percent of the city’s seven million population, every commodity associated with the festivities opens up huge business opportunities.
The volumes of business, mostly in the unorganised sector, are beyond anybody’s guess.
The business covering eatables, garments and footwear is estimated to be over Rs.2,000 crore.

Unsealed birth records give adoptees peek at past

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) Maura Duffy spent a day in Chicago last September with her mother: A walk along Lake Michigan, shared meals, a boat tour highlighting Second City architecture.

But this was no typical mother-daughter outing. It was the first time the two women had ever met.
Since a handful of states, including Illinois, have unsealed birth certificates, thousands of adoptees have claimed them and learned about their beginnings. The 35-year-old Duffy, adopted at birth, is among 8,800 Illinois residents since 2010 to do so.
Not everyone who gets the document goes on a search. But for many, it's led to heart-rending reunions.
"I finally got to see and meet someone who looked exactly like me," said Duffy, a marketing professional. "It's a very kind of emotional, strange thing that you grow up your whole life and don't ever know anything about your background. And it's the first chapter of your life, that birth certificate."

Obtaining a birth certificate  something most people can do without much thought — often is a visceral, as much as legal, quest for an adoptee.
"The things that people take for granted are enormous, life-changing moments" for adoptees, said Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, a Chicago Democrat and adoptee who sponsored the Illinois law and still breaks down when discussing it.
Feigenholtz, who met her birth mother years ago, worked for more than a decade to open birth certificates in Illinois, which like nearly every other state had sealed such records from the 1940s through the 1980s. There are several reasons adoptees want access to those records, including learning medical histories crucial to determining health risks. Many adoptees believe they have a right to such a personal, intimate record.
Illinois is one of 11 states to have open birth certificates and one of nine to have unsealed them since 1999, according to the American Adoption Congress. And because of its size, the Prairie State has seen more adoptees get those papers than most. Still, the 8,800 is only 2.5 percent of the 350,000 Illinois adoptees' records that were sealed beginning in 1946.
In Oregon, which opened its records in 2000, 11,500, or nearly 11 percent of the 108,000 records sealed after 1957, have been requested. Alabama didn't seal 300,000 records until 1991, reopened them just nine years later, and 5,800 adoptees have requested them. Rhode Island reopened 24,000 records in 2012 after 68 years, and 759 people have laid claim to their birth certificates.

Some adoptive children have reunited with birth families without open-records laws. Public intermediary services, private businesses and volunteers help reunite willing adoptees and birth mothers, although sometimes it involves hundreds of dollars and no guarantee of success.
Jenny Spinner, who grew up in an adoptive home in Decatur with her twin sister, found her mother before the law changed. But Spinner, a 43-year-old mother, English professor and researcher in Philadelphia whose intrepid inquiries have prompted preparation of a book about the experience, is frustrated by the lack of documentation of her personal story. She still wanted her birth certificate for the emotional connection it brought.
"The paper that I've been looking for just to see all our names together in one space has still eluded me, outside of this birth certificate," Spinner said. "It's the only thing where her name is stamped on a document that has my birthdate. That proves it."
States generally had open birth records until the mid-20th Century when unwed motherhood became more stigmatized, said Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, a not-for-profit, nonpartisan research and policy center.
Birth certificates often were stamped "illegitimate" and sealing them was thought to protect the baby, the adoptive family from intrusion and was even considered, in some circles, the cleanest break for a "maladjusted" mother to re-enter society and later marry.

Opponents contend birth mothers were promised privacy in perpetuity, which Donaldson Institute research has not been able to substantiate, and research shows both adopted children and the parents who gave them up want contact, Pertman said.
The trend is "toward greater honesty, greater openness," said Pertman, adding it's "way too slow."
In Pennsylvania, an adopted lawmaker has introduced legislation to open birth records there, and Illinois Rep. Ann Williams, an adoptee who was born in the Keystone state, traveled there to testify July 17 in favor of the bill. Williams, a Chicago Democrat whose district neighbors Feigenholtz's, told the committee the Illinois law brought excitement, joy and fulfillment" to nearly 9,000 adoptees, but for her, it was "bittersweet, as I was not among them.Dave Reynolds, a 46-year-old health care-plan operator from Deerfield, didn't seek his birth record until he met Feigenholtz, who encouraged him. He just spoke by phone about a month ago to his birth mother, who lives in another state and never told anyone in her family about her son.
"I'd love to meet my birth mom face-to-face. I'd love to give her a hug," Reynolds said. "I'd love to meet my half-brothers. That would be a neat moment. But that's on her timetable. If it never happens, then I'm just so thankful I had a chance to thank her.View gallery."

The meetings can be just as wrenching and emotional for birth mothers, and many adoptees are reluctant to ask them to come forward and speak publicly. Nor is it always an easy process for the family that reared an adopted child.
Duffy's adoptive mother, who is ill with Alzheimer's, often talked with her daughter about finding her birth family. The process has been hard on her father, but "I'm not going anywhere," Duffy said. They were the people that put a Band-Aid on my knee when I scraped it. They're my family," she said. "It's just nice to start to get to know this person who gave so much up for me, who did such a selfless thing for me, giving me birth and bringing me into this world."

NASA Flooded with Asteroid Exploration Ideas

SAN JOSE, Calif.  A NASA call for novel ideas on how to tackle its ambitious mission to capture an asteroid and park it near the moon has paid off in spades, with the agency receiving hundreds of proposals from potential partners.
NASA has received more than 400 proposals from private companies, non-profit groups and international organizations in response to a call for asteroid-retrieval mission suggestions released last month, agency officials announced Friday (July 26). The space agency will review the submissions over the next month and plan to discuss the most promising ideas in a public workshop in September. We are really excited about the overwhelming response," NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver told reporters here at the NewSpace 2013 conference, adding that the ideas were "overwhelmingly positive.NASA put out an official request for information on June 18 to seek input on how to achieve its asteroid retrieval mission. That asteroid capture plan, which NASA unveiled in April, is known as the agency's Asteroid Initiative. [How It Works: NASA Asteroid-Capture Mission in Pictures]The NASA asteroid retrieval mission aims to send a robotic spacecraft out to a near-Earth asteroid, snare it with a "space lasso" and tow it back to a parking orbit near the moon so it can be explored by astronauts. The asteroid mission is NASA's way of pursuing the goal set by President Barack Obama that called on NASA to send a manned mission to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, and then aim for a Mars flight in the 2030s.
On June 18, NASA also unveiled its Asteroid Grand Challenge, an effort to find and identify all of the asteroids that could pose a threat to Earth, as well as develop ideas to defend the planet against potential impacts. The effort is one of several national "grand challenges" announced by the Obama Administration and other government agencies in recent weeks to spur scientific progress and innovation.
"Under our plan, we're increasing the identification, tracking and exploration of asteroids, and the response to this initiative has been gratifying," Garver told an audience of private spaceflight experts and enthusiasts at the NewSpace conference here. "The aerospace industry, innovative small businesses and citizen scientists have many creative ideas and strategies for carrying out our asteroid exploration mission and helping us to protect our home planet from dangerous near-Earth objects.About one-third of the 400 proposals were concepts tied to NASA's Asteroid Grand Challenge, while the rest dealt directly with components of the asteroid-retrieval mission.
NASA's asteroid retrieval mission has sparked intense debate among members of Congress over whether the space agency should maintain its focus on manned asteroid exploration or shift instead to a moon-oriented goal.
Garver said today that asteroid exploration and lunar exploration should not be viewed as an either/or choice, but as complementary targets for future human and robotic spaceflight. But new lunar exploration missions should aim for a sustained presence on the moon, and not just be a repeat of NASA's Apollo lunar landings, she added.
"We truly have an increased focus on sustainable lunar activity," Garver said.
NASA's request for information on its asteroid plans is one of three calls for input by the agency on several space exploration efforts. On July 2, NASA launched a call for ideas from private space industry to learn more about how the agency might work with commercial moon lander missions. On July 17, NASA released a call for proposals from private spaceflight companies for unfunded partnerships with the space agency that could take advantage of the agency's expertise.

Great white shark tagging expedition said to be most ambitious in U.S. history

Imagine a world in which people can keep tabs on all of the large great white sharks that roam the world’s oceans.Lots more would be learned about apex predators that, by and large, remain mysterious.

While tht day may never come, scientists are getting closer, and this week a group called OCEARCH has announced that it will embark on the most ambitious tagging project in U.S. history.
OCEARCH, led by Chris Fischer and Greg Skomal, on Tuesday will embark on a month-long expedition off Cape Cod, during which it plans to capture, tag, and release as many as 20 great white sharksDuring the tagging process, a team of scientists will take samples and conduct other studies they say will help answer a lot of unknowns.
It’s hoped that more knowledge will help scientists pursue greater protections in areas the sharks frequent.
On the West Coast, different scientists have determined that many adult white sharks that gather seasonally at seal rookeries off California and at Mexico’s Guadalupe Island venture to a vast featureless area each spring and summer. It’s not yet known why.
Off the East Coast, OCEARCH is learning that white sharks spend lots more time off the Southeast than previously believed. One shark shocked scientists, however, when it ventured far up the coast in the winter, at which time the water temperature was 38 degrees.
Fisher, who was interviewed on CBS about the project (video posted above), said that in order to obtain a clearer picture of where these sharks travel, a larger sample size is required.
Because white sharks are an embattled species around the world, scientists everywhere agree, more research and a greater understanding of their habits is needed.
Said Fischer: “They are the balance keeper, the lion of the ocean. There is no robust path forward for the ocean, without a robust path for their sharks. And we must understand their lives to be able to impact their future.

“This expedition brings together an amazing team of researchers with broad experience in multiple disciplines,” said Skomal, a senior scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. “In doing so, we will be conducting over a dozen studies on white sharks, ranging from broad and fine scale migratory patterns to sonograms.
Our knowledge base on Atlantic white sharks will grow exponentially, helping both science and public safety.”Thanks to a permit issued by Massachusetts, the group will be working close to the Cape Cod coast, where 15,000 seals gather seasonally, attracting predatory white sharks. The expedition, funded largely by Caterpillar, will be aboard the 126-foot MV/OCEARCH.
OCEARCH, through its Shark Tracker website, is already monitoring the movements of 38 sharks worldwide. Among the handful that has already been tagged off the East Coast are Mary Lee and Lydia.
Mary Lee is a 3,500-pound female who was tagged last year, and scientists, students, and shark fans have plotted a course that extends as far north as Boston to her current position off Georgia.
Lydia is a 2,000-pound female who was tagged last March, and has since traveled eastward, far beyond Bermuda, as far north as Rhode Island, and is presently off the Southeast, like Mary Lee.At one point Lydia was right up along the coast of Jacksonville, Florida.
While the OCEARCH tagging program is somewhat controversial, because it entails bolting a large satellite SPOT tag to the predators’ dorsal fins, it is beginning to give scientists a better understanding of where these iconic sharks travel.

Musician JJ Cale dies; wrote Clapton, Skynyrd hits

If musicians were measured not by the number of records they sold but by the number of peers they influenced, JJ Cale would have been a towering figure in 1970s rock 'n' roll.
His best songs like "After Midnight,Cocaine and "Call Me the Breeze" were towering hits for other artists. Eric Clapton took "After Midnight" and Cocain and turned them into the kind of hard-party anthems that defined rock for a long period of time. And Lynyrd Skynyrd took the easy-shuffling "Breeze" and supercharged it with a three-guitar attack that made it a hit.
Cale, the singer-songwriter and producer known as the main architect of the Tulsa Sound, passed away Friday night at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. His manager, Mike Kappus, said Cale died of a heart attack. He was 74.While his best known songs remain in heavy rotation on the radio nearly 40 years later, most folks wouldn't be able to name Cale as their author. That was a role he had no problem with.
"No, it doesn't bother me, Cale said with a laugh in an interview posted on his website. "What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail. And the checks rolled in for decades. The list of artists who covered his music or cite him as a direct influence reads like a who's who of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame  Clapton, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Mark Knopfler, The Allman Brothers, Carlos Santana, Captain Beefheart and Bryan Ferry among many others.Young said in Jimmy McDonough's biography Shakey that Cale and Jimi Hendrix were the best guitar players he had ever heard. And in his recent memoir "Waging Heavy Peace, Young said Cale's "Crazy Mama his biggest hit, rising to No. 22 on the Billboard singles chart  was one of the five songs that most influenced him as a songwriter: "The song is true, simple, and direct, and the delivery is very natural. JJ's guitar playing is a huge influence on me. His touch is unspeakable
It was Clapton who forged the closest relationship with Cale. They were in sync musically and personally. Clapton also recorded Cale songs "Travelin' Light" and "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" and included the Cale composition "Angel" on his most recent album, "Old Sock." Other songs like "Layla" didn't involve Cale, but clearly owe him a debt. The two also collaborated together on "The Road to Escondido," which won the Grammy Award for best contemporary blues album in 2008.Clapton once told Vanity Fair that Cale was the living person he most admired, and Cale weighed the impact Clapton had on his life in a 2006 interview with The Associated Press: "I'd probably be selling shoes today if it wasn't for Eric."
That quote was typical of the always humble Cale. But while Clapton was already a star when he began mining Cale's catalog, there's no doubt the music they shared cemented his "Clapton is God" status and defined the second half of his career.
As hard as I've tried I've never really succeeded in getting a record to sound like him and that's what I want, Clapton said in a "Fast Focus" video interview to promote "Escondido. Before I go under the ground, I want to make a JJ Cale album with him at the helm.Clapton described Cale's music as a strange hybrid. It's not really blues, it's not really folk or country or rock 'n' roll. It's somewhere in the middle.Cale arrived at that intersection by birth. Born John Weldon Cale in Oklahoma City, he was raised in Tulsa. Buffeted by country and western on one side and the blues on the other, Oklahoma offered a melting pot of styles. Cale leaned on those styles as he spent his formative years in Los Angeles and Nashville, but he also used drum machines and often acted as his own producer, engineer and session player. He'd bury his own whispery vocals in the mix, causing the listener to lean in and focus.
" think it goes back to me being a recording mixer and engineer," Cale said in a 2009 biography on his website. "Because of all the technology now you can make music yourself and a lot of people are doing that now. I started out doing that a long time ago and I found when I did that I came up with a unique sound.Talbott reported from Nashville, Tenn. AP writer Shaya Tayefe Mohajer in Los Angeles and AP Music Writer Mesfin Fekadu in New York contributed to this report.

Study Finds Only 28 Percent of Millionaires Think They're Rich

If you had investments worth a million dollars, would you consider yourself rich? How about $5 million? Well, hold on to your wallet because a new study has found that the majority of millionaires don't consider themselves rich
According to a study from investment bank UBS, entitled "What is Wealthy?," 40 percent of those with $5 million in investable assets said they didn't feel they were rich. And only 28 percent of investors who had between $1 and $5 million in investable assets viewed themselves as rich.
"To us, the surprise was that that many people with $1 million or more did not consider themselves wealthy," said Emily Pachuta, head of investor insights at UBS Wealth Management Americas. "We think it shows a very interesting mindset shift. People have certainly experienced a shock from the volatility of the market, and they are very aware that it takes a significant amount of money to have that dual feeling of having enough money and no financial constraints.According to the opt-in, online survey of 4,450 Americans ages 25 plus with a minimum of at least $250,000 in investable assets (half with at least $1 million in investable assets), 50 percent of investors define wealth as "having no financial constraints on what they do." However, although the $5 million-plus investors are twice as likely to feel wealthy as investors with $1 million to $5 million in assets, only 64 percent of the former and 62 percent of the latter felt confident that they would achieve their goals.
If this outlook seems a little oddespecially when you consider that the median household income for May 2013 was $51,500 and the average 401(k) account has about $80,000experts are not especially surprised.
"It's shocking to those of us wo are not personally in that range, but it's not surprising when you take into the account the costs and expenses that are associated with people at that level of wealth," said Cliff Goldstein, a personal finance associate at Nerd Wallet, a cost comparison website.
Indeed, of those who have adult children, 80 percent said they are providing financial support for adult children, grandchildren or aging parents. "Unemployment, the economy and aging parents cause concern about the financial situation, he said.
David Cay Johnston, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of books including The Fine Print and Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich—and Cheat Everybody Else, said he wasn't surprised by the Poor-Me-Millionaires.
For starters, research has shown that many rich people are afraid they will lose it all. Secondly, wealth is relative, especially in a world that is trying to keep up with the Jones's (whoever they are).
"In New York City, being wealthy enough to own upright a property worth $5 million doesn't make you feel rich, because you're surrounded by people who can buy and sell you in a two hours income," he told ABC News. "There are always some people around you who have more. Also, having $5 million in Keokuk, Iowa, is a lot different than having $5 million in New York or Silicon Valley or Seattle."
What's more, he says, most people don't understand money. "Handling assets and understanding what they are is a skill very few people have," he said. To most people money is a stream and not a pool of assets."
One thing that does make investors feel confident is holding a significant amount of cash. According to UBS, despite significant market gains over the past year, investors keep an average of around 20 percent of their assets in cash, as they have for the past three years. Sixty-four percent feel they have the right amount of cash, and 56 percent expect to keep the same level of cash for the next 12 months.
Wealthy investors' two top personal finance concerns are long-term care and the finances of their children and grandchildren. While most feel highly prepared in their retirement planning (62 percent), 36 percent said they were not prepared at all. These people have a lot of money," said Goldstein. "But the reason they don't feel wealthy is because they don't feel like they have a comprehensive financial plan in place to take care of all of these longer-term costs.

Gone batty: David Ortiz ejected after arguing balls and strikes, destroys bullpen phone

Boston Red Sox designed hitter David Ortiz officially flipped his lid on Saturday night.
After striking out in the seventh inning against Jairo Asencio, Ortiz turned his attention to home plate umpire
Tim Timmons to argue a 3-0 strike call earlier in the at-bat. To Timmons' credit, he let Ortiz show him up by pointing to his helmet  indicating he felt the pitch in question was too high  and give him an earful all the way back to the dugout without reacting. In most cases, Ortiz's actions constitute an immediate ejection, but Timmons was willing to move on had he dropped his case peacefully.
Instead, Ortiz went bonkers and ended up smashing the bullpen phone in the visiting dugout at Camden Yards into smithereens with his bat (see: 1:22 in the video).
Ortiz's violent meltdown didn't really fall under the entertainment category. It was actually very dangerous and a little scary as shrapnel from the bat and phone flew all over the dugout. In fact, some of the shrapnel nearly took a chunk out of teammate Dustin Pedroia.
Woah. Easy there, big fella.
With the dust and particles now settled, I think it's safe to say a suspension will be coming Ortiz's way in the coming days. It probably won't be a lengthy ban, but it's a good time to send another reminder that such violent outbursts can't and won't be tolerated by Major League Baseball.
Fortunately for the Red Sox, a suspension is the only thing they have to worry about right now. That's a much better outcome than setting a timetable for Pedroia's return had one of those pieces of shrapnel found its way into his eye.

2nd body found in NY river where best man fell in

PIERMONT, N.Y. (AP) A day after a bride-to-be was pulled dead from the Hudson River, the body of her fiance's best man was found a mile downstream Sunday, the second victim of a nighttime crash involving a
speedboat and a barge north of New York City. The deadly collision left the groom-to-be grieving for his intended and his best friend, while facing surgery for his own injuries as another friend is charged with manslaughter  two weeks before the wedding day.I don't think you can put words to what we have to tell these families, Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said as he announced that a body believed to be that of Mark Lennon 30 the best man, was found Sunday morning.
At the church where Lindsey Stewart and Brian Bond, both 30, would have been married Aug. 10, the pastor said their lives "were filled with hopes and dreams, and that has been snuffed away."
Stewart, Bond, Lennon and three others were on a speedboat that crashed Friday night into a barge holding equipment for the construction of a replacement for the Tappan Zee.The group had left the village of Piermont for a short trip aboard the 21-foot Stingray across the river to Tarrytown, about 30 miles north of New York City, authorities said.Police said it was being piloted by Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, whom they suspect was intoxicated and who has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault.
Stewart and Lennon were thrown off the boat. When the bodies were found, they did not have life vests on, said Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera.Bond, John and two others, whose names have not been made public because they are witnesses, were injured and hospitalized. One of the witnsses has been released from the hospital, Falco said Sunday. Mitchell Turk, a friend of Bond's family, said Bond would be undergoing surgery on Monday.Turk, of Orangetown, said he visited with Bond's mother on Sunday at her Pearl River home. It's sad and quiet there, long faces, he said. "They're trying to carry on, doing as well as can be expected. I'm a little shaken. When you think of what they've lost, a daughter-in-law, Brian injured, it's tough.Turk's daughter, Sheryl Palacio, said she has known Bond, an art teacher, all her life.
"He's an outstanding teacher, a wonderful, kind, respectful man," she said.
She said Lennon was Bond's best friend and John was "his other best friend." She described the suspect as a good man, happy and loving."She said John "would never, ever want to put his friends in danger."I just hope Brian is able to move past this," she added.
It was not clear if John had an attorney. Falco said a mug shot of John released Sunday was from a previous arrest but he would not elaborate.
At Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, where Stewart and Bond had planned to get married, the Rev. John Havrilla said he remembered them as children. He told The Journal News that Stewart, who worked for an insurance company, was an important part of the congregation. Her loss, and the wedding, just makes this even more of a heartache," he said.Falco said the body believed to be Lennon's was discovered by a person on a recreational watercraft who then called 911. Twelve search boats were on the water at the time. The county medical examiner will have to officially identify both bodies but police feel sure they are Stewart's and Lennon's.

The sheriff said the barge's lighting would be part of the investigation of the crash. Authorities have said the barge was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water late at night.
A spokesman for the $3.9 billion bridge project said the barges were properly lit Friday night, but lighting has since been added. We will determine if those barges were lit properly and if it was a factor  Falco said.
Pre-construction work related to the new bridge was suspended for the weekend but is to resume Monday.

Adrian Peterson says he wants HGH testing in NFL to show he is clean

It's hard, in this era of steroids, human growth hormone and whatever else athletes are using to enhance their performance, to not be skeptical of Adrian Peterson and what he did last season.
He suffered a bad knee injury late in the 2011 season, and less than a year later he rushed for more than 2,000 yards and almost broke Eric Dickerson's record. He looked even better than he did before his ACL surgery, and he has been pretty good ever since we took notice of him when he was at Oklahoma

Rescued hikers drown inside vehicle leaving state park

A pair of hikers who had been rescued after getting lost in the fog and rain inside a Maine state park drowned on Tuesday night when their car plunged into the water off a boat launch as they were trying to
leave.Amy Stiner, 37 and Melissa Moyer, 38, were found dead inside a minivan in 20 feet of water about 175 feet from the boat ramp on the edge of Roque Bluffs State Park, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said. A dog, a pit bull mix who was with them also drowned.Officials say the women, who had just been returned to their vehicle by a game warden, took a wrong turn as they were driving away from the parking area."The end of the road becomes the boat landing and they just weren't familiar with it," Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith told the Kennebec Journal. "It was foggy and rainy and they literally drove off the boat landing right into the water.Stiner made a desperate call to 911 at approximately 9 p.m., saying they were trapped inside the submerged minivan and that it was filling up with water, according to the Bangor Daily News."And then the phone just went dead Smith said.
Police used GPS data from the cellphone to locate the general area of the van, and called in the Maine Marine Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard to join in the search, but it was too late.
Stiner, who lived in nearby Machias, Maine was five months pregnant, police said. Moyer, from Sunbury, Pa., was visiting when the tragedy unfolded.
Earlier, Stiner and Moyer had used a cellphone to call for help after they became lost during their hike.
An off-duty firefighter with the Sunrise Search and Rescue team found the pair and their dog on the western shore of the park and took them to a nearby house Smith said. A game warden then picked them up and brought them back to their vehicle.
The state medical examiner was called to determine the official cause of death, but Smith said he didn't suspect any foul play. It's just so easy to do Smith said. When I got the call last night, I knew what had happened.
